Antonia Bance is an outstanding outspoken UK Labour councillor and blogger dedicated to educating and communicating with her constituents via Internet technology.
Profile Organization: Oxford City Council , www.antoniabance.org.uk Title: City Councillor, Rose Hill and Iffley ward (Labour) Biography: Antonia grew up in south London and studied ancient history at Oxford University. In 2001-2, she was full-time vice president of Oxford University Student Union. Following her sabbatical year, she became a campaigner for YWCA England & Wales. After working on YWCA’s first ever public campaign, RESPECT young mums, Antonia was promoted to manage all the organisation’s campaign activity. YWCA’s next major campaign will launch in early 2007. Antonia is a member of the board of the Fawcett Society, the UK’s campaign for equality for women and men, and a trustee of her local Sure Start family centre. Antonia lives with her partner, Jo, in Rose Hill, Oxford. Antonia joined the Labour party in 2000, at the age of 20. In 2005, she stood for Parliament for the constituency of Oxford West and Abingdon. In May 2006, she was elected as councillor for the Rose Hill and Iffley ward of Oxford City Council, and was nominated to be an opposition member of the executive board. Antonia is an experienced elections organiser, earning her spurs in campaigns in Oxford and elsewhere, including a spell volunteering with Liberty PA on the 2004 American election campaign in Philadelphia. Antonia’s main political interests are domestic policy – particularly ending poverty in the UK and supporting young people, women and families. She would describe herself as a democratic socialist and a feminist. Antonia believes that Labour offers the UK the best chance to enjoy a future of equality and social justice, and will work for a Labour fourth term, no matter who the next Labour leader is. As a blogger before she was an elected politician, Antonia’s website is both a personal site and a political one. The blog is for her opinions and things she’s interested in, as well as information about the ward she represents and help and advice for residents. Over the past few years, her site has been featured in The Guardian, Newsweek, the London Evening Standard and other on and offline media outlets. Recent and upcoming notable projects: Continuing to improve www.antoniabance.org.uk as a tool for informing residents of my ward and communicating with them both in and out of election time; writing for www.newstatesman.com from Labour party conference in September 2006; launching a major campaign about women’s poverty on- and offline in early 2007.
