The City of Barcelona, Spain Joan Clos, Mayor of Barcelona
Joan Clos is using the power of the Internet and communication technology to improve life in the City of Barcelona, Spain. The Barcelona city web site offers a myriad of features from virtual tours for tourists to minute-by-minute updated traffic information, as well as continuing coverage of city projects. The site is integrated with a citizen's telephone information service that received over 1 million calls last year. Of special interest is Barcelona Activa - a private municipal company for innovation and knowledge businesses. It is "the first Virtual Business Incubator in Europe." The Internet is also an important campaign tool for Joan Clos, who is running for re-election as Mayor. His campaign web site is one of the best produced campaign sites in Europe to date. There are many site features including good overall design, complete biography, issue platforms, plans for the future of the city, interactive campaign volunteer opportunities and more.

Political Spin:

Office holders take notes -- These two web sites are good examples of the way in which cyber-savvy politicians can effectively use the Internet to promote their government duties as well as their own re-election efforts. Clos is fulfilling a commitment toward making Barcelona a better place to live while at the same time, on a different web site, utilizing the power of the Internet as a political campaigning tool.
