UK Spy Compromised On Facebook
Photo's from a family vacation posted on Facebook may compromise the safety of Britain's soon to be spy chief Sir John Sawyer and placed a spotlight on the ease of a UK government security breach.
She was merely documenting the life and times of her family on a Facebook page, but Lady Shelley Sawers may have just outed her spy and diplomat husband, Sir John Sawyer, the soon to be Chief of M16, Britain's Secret Intelligence Services. Sawyer is to take over the position in November, putting him in charge of all of Britain's spy operations abroad.
The pictures of Sawyer vacationing with family and friends have been removed from Facebook since The Mail broke the story on Sunday. The Mail reports, "his wife's entries on the social networking site have exposed potentially compromising details about where they live and work, who their friends are and where they spend their holidays."
The seriousness of the posted pictures was furthered by Lady Sawer's surprising lapse of judgement in putting little to no privacy protection on her Facebook profile. She was part of the open-access London network and may have exposed her family and friends to over 200 million users.
