Spitzer Scandal Rocks the NYTimes Site
The New York Time's website is credited as the whistleblower in the online prostitution ring scandal that brought about New York Governor Eliot Spitzer’s resignation.Less than 48 hours after the NYT story broke, Spitzer announced effective Monday, March 17, he will resign as Governor of New York, with Lt. Governor David A. Patterson taking over the position.
According to NYT spokesman, Diane McNulty, on Monday afternoon, online readers flocked to the original NYT’s article causing the website to crash between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. On Monday alone, the website saw 60% more traffic than usually.
Ms. McNulty responded to an inquiry by the Huffington Post, as to whether a crash like this has ever happened before by saying “Yes, twice: Once on September 11, 2001, and then again on Nov. 12, 2001, when American Airlines Flight 587 crashed in Queens. Said McNulty: "It's hard to tell how either one compares to today's event given that we have almost 10 times the bandwidth now."
Spitzer, a super delegated committed to Democratic Candidate Hilary Clinton, is no longer listed as a supporter on Clinton’s campaign website.
